Living with fibromyalgia can be painful, fatiguing and can often force you to limit or eliminate the very things you love to do. While fibromyalgia can be challenging, you can make adjustments to have fun, be productive and live the life you love. Here are some tips on how to conquer it all.
Health Care is Self Care
It may seem obvious, but many who live with fibromyalgia avoid taking proper care of themselves. Be sure to stay on top of your meds. Without them, you may not get enough symptom relief, and it will be harder to do everyday activities. Keep a journal. If there’s something triggering your symptoms, keep a journal and share it with your doctor at your next visit. You could also try supplemental therapies such as acupuncture and massage therapy for pain relief.
Move Your Body
Exercise is a great way to be healthy and feel strong. Staying active reduces fatigue and pain, boosts your endorphins and can help improve that “brain fog.” There are plenty of options for staying active, and you can find one that fits your lifestyle. Light cardio exercises like walking or swimming can give you a lasting boost. If you want to feel steadier, try balancing exercises. Resistance training can increase your strength and fitness level. You can even try something fun like dancing or bike riding.
A good night’s sleep can be anywhere from difficult to downright impossible for those suffering from fibromyalgia. Practicing good sleeping habits can regulate your body clock to make falling – and staying – asleep easier. Exercise will also promote easier sleep. If you need an extra push into dreamland, a soak in a warm tub can help you relax and ease your pain. Make sure the room temperature is slightly cool to avoid sweating or throwing the covers off and on.
Go With the Flow
We all get overwhelmed with work, chores, responsibilities, family, etc. That’s life! Worrying and feeling anxious is only going to drain your energy, mentally and physically. Try meditation or yoga to help focus your thoughts or clear your mind. Set your priorities, keep your thoughts positive, and “go with the flow.”
Fuel Your Body
Eating nutrient-rich foods is important for any happy, healthy lifestyle. It can improve moods, energy levels, and physical health. Be colorful with your plates and go as natural as possible. Avoid sugar, which can cause inflammation in the body; as well as alcohol, tobacco and processed foods.
There are tons of helpful smartphone apps that can provide recipes and help you get creative in the kitchen, as well as track your diet and exercise.
Communication is the key to relationships. Talk with your partner, family, and friends about what’s going on with you. If you’re going through a rough patch, you can always rely on someone to lend an ear, hand or shoulder. Your loved ones, friends, co-workers and doctor should be your fibromyalgia support group.
